** The ANTI-ASIAN VIOLENCE NETWORK **

INTRODUCTION

The "Audit of Violence Against Asian Pacific Americans" (April 1994) was the first comprehensive, nationwide, non-governmental attempt to assess the extent of anti-Asian violence It was conducted by the National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium (NAPALC). According to the audit, there were 335 reported anti-Asian incidents in the U.S. during 1993. These include intimidation, vandalism, assault, robbery, and homicide. In 1993, there were at least 30 homicides where an anti-Asian racial motivation was suspected or proven.

Anti-Asian violence is a growing problem, but many hate crimes in the U.S. go unreported. Some are not taken seriously by the local police authorities. Many states do not even collect data on anti-Asian incidents. This gives us the impression that the problem doesn't exist. Often the victims of hate crimes and many concerned people are left asking the question, "What else can we do?" Incidents of anti-Asian violence often leave people angry, frustrated, and feeling quite helpless.

Hopefully, the Internet network can be part of the "solution". It will aid the Asian American community to organize and to educate itself, and to find ways to deal with the problem of anti-Asian violence...
